The School of Science of China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing) originated from the Department of Basic Science of China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing Campus), established in 1998, which was adjusted to the School of Basic Science in 2002. In 2004, the school was further adjusted and the school of Science was established. Now, this school consists of three departments, namely, Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Department of Computational Mathematics and Statistics, Department of Physics and the Experiment Center of Physics.

The School has one first-level discipline of doctoral degree authorization points and postdoctoral mobile station, and three first-level disciplines of master degree authorization points. As the first reference book of mathematics since 1949, "Handbook of Mathematics” was published by our predecessor. In both the fourth round and the fifth round of discipline assessment by the Ministry of Education, mathematics was rated as B category. The discipline of mathematics has entered the top 1% of ESI global ranking since 2019.

The School has emerged outstanding scholars such as the winner of the State Natural Science Award, the winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and the foreign academician of the Russian National Academy of Engineering. At present, there are 57 full-time staff members, including 11 professors and 24 associate professors, among whom one was selected for the Ministry of Education's "Trans-Century Talents Training Program” and one was selected for the "New Century Talent Support Program" of the Ministry of Education; one’s student earned the honor of “100 best doctoral dissertations in China”; one is selected for the Ministry of Education's "Cross Century Excellent Talent Training Program"; one is selected for the Ministry of Education's "New Century Excellent Talent Support Program", and one is awarded as the top 2% of scientists in the world.

Over the past 10 years, our college has won 4 provincial and ministerial level natural science awards and 2 provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological progress awards. The publications are in famous academic journals such as “Physical Review Letters”, “Advances in Mathematics”, “Transactions of the American Mathematical Society”,“ Journal of Functional Analysis”, “Proceedings of the Royal Society A”, “Advances in Nonlinear Analysis”,“ Journal de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées. Neuvième Série”, “Journal of Differential Equations”, “Journal of High Energy Physics” and “SIAM”. Young teachers are invited to give a series of scientific research lectures at internationally renowned research institutions, and to give invitation presentations at international academic conferences.

The School began admitting master's students in 1999, undergraduate students in 2000, and doctoral students in 2009. There are two undergraduate majors: "Mathematics and Applied Mathematics" and "Information and Computational Science". The "Information and Computational Science" major was awarded as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites in 2019, and the "Mathematics and Applied Mathematics" major was selected as one of the first-class undergraduate major construction sites in Beijing in 2021.  

In terms of talent cultivation, the college has won five teaching awards at provincial and ministerial levels, three national coal industry education and teaching achievement awards, one first batch of national first-class undergraduate courses, and three high-quality undergraduate courses in Beijing (including one key high-quality course). Besides, one MOOC course has been established, many online resource courses were completed and over ten textbooks and monographs were published. In the Basic Teaching Skills Competition for Young Teachers in Beijing Universities, two young teachers from this school won the first prize, one won the second prize, and one won the third prize, respectively, and two won the Excellent Guidance Teacher Award; One person won the second prize in the Beijing Teacher Teaching Innovation Competition.

The achievements of subject competitions supervised by school teachers have been remarkable. In 2022, our student won the Shing-Tung Yau Excellence Award in College Student Mathematics Competition, and in 2021, our students participated in the National College Student Physics Experiment Competition for the first time where our school's student award rate was 100%, and the number of winners of the highest prize in the competition ranked first among all participating universities in the country. Special Prize was also awarded in the 11th "Challenge Cup" Capital University Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition in 2021, while the first prize was awarded in the 7th China International "Internet" Undergraduate Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition (Beijing Area). In the Chinese Graduate Mathematical Modeling Competition, our school's students won the highest prize for the first time in the competition; In the National College Student Mathematics Competition, the number and award rate of students supervised by our teachers ranked among the top in Beijing universities, and many teachers were awarded as Excellent Guidance Teacher;  the number of winners of the National College Student Mathematical Modeling Competition and the North American College Student Mathematical Modeling Competition is steadily increasing. Our students have also achieved national awards in other national competitions such as the National Statistical Modeling Competition and the National College Student Market Research and Analysis Competition.

In recent years, three grassroots organizations of demonstration students in Beijing universities have emerged in the college, and the student party branch has won three third prizes and one excellent award in the Beijing Red "1+1" demonstration activity. In March 2024, the student party branch of Shahe Campus was selected as the "National Party Building Model Branch" cultivation unit. In 2023, one second phase of the Ministry of Education's supply and demand docking employment and education project was approved.

In recent years, the rate of school's undergraduate pursuing graduate study has exceeded 50%. Undergraduate graduates go on to study in universities including the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Peking University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fudan University, Shandong University, Pennsylvania State University, Columbia University, Edinburgh University, University of London, Freiberg University of Technology in Germany, Australian National University and other well-known universities at home and abroad.

Many graduates have now grown into the backbone of their units. Among them, there are national outstanding teachers, academic elites who  published papers as the first author in the top journal “Science” within ten years of undergraduate graduation, won the "Science Exploration Award" and "Damo Academy Green Orange Award", and has been reported by the People's Daily. There are also industry elites who have been recognized as "National Youth Job Experts" at the national level and have won the "Excellent Engineering Gold Award" and "Innovation Application Silver Award" within five years after graduatation with a master's degree.
